5 Chefs’ Restaurants in the Algarve

The Algarve is famous for its beaches, its golf and its light, but for anyone building a life here there is another luxury worth knowing about: this is one of Portugal’s great dining regions.

The 2026 Michelin Guide confirms it, with the Algarve holding two of the country’s coveted two-star restaurants and a clutch of one-star addresses besides. If part of what draws you to southern Portugal is the promise of the good life, these five Chefs’ Restaurants in the Algarve show what that can taste like.

Vila Joya at Hotel Vila Joya

If the Algarve has a temple of fine dining, this is it. Vila Joya holds two Michelin stars in the 2026 Guide, where Austrian-born chef Dieter Koschina blends the fine craftsmanship of classic Central European cooking with the flavours and produce of Portugal, a country that captivated him more than thirty years ago.

Perched on a cliffside near Albufeira, above Praia da Galé, it has held its two stars since 1999 and remains one of Portugal’s most iconic destinations, with just thirty tables and breathtaking ocean views.

Gusto

For something in a different register, Gusto by Heinz Beck brings the sensibility of one of the world’s most celebrated Italian chefs to the Algarve. Housed at the Conrad Algarve in Almancil, near Quinta do Lago, Gusto by Heinz Beck holds one Michelin star in the 2026 Guide. It is Heinz Beck’s Italian room, his Michelin outpost in the south of Portugal, delivered quietly and with polish.

The result is refined Mediterranean cooking with an Italian heart, lighter and more precise than you might expect, set within one of the smartest resorts in the Golden Triangle. If you are drawn to the Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo area, whether to visit or to live, this is the fine-dining anchor on your doorstep.

Restaurante Bon Bon

Tucked into the hills above Carvoeiro, surrounded by olive trees and citrus groves, Bon Bon offers the Algarve’s most intimate take on haute cuisine. It received its first Michelin star in 2015 and, under chef José Lopes, showcases a seasonal tasting menu that changes frequently depending on what the ocean and the land provide, with a deep respect for the region’s traditions. With just a handful of tables and an open kitchen, it is as much about connection and precision as it is about the food.

Unusually for the region, Bon Bon sits inland rather than on the seafront, with a comfortable, characterful room that works beautifully even on the cooler days that the Algarve does occasionally have. It is a favourite for those who want serious cooking in a relaxed, personal setting rather than a grand one.

Restaurante Ocean

Back on the coast, at the luxurious Vila Vita Parc resort, Ocean is the Algarve’s other two-star great. Austrian chef Hans Neuner has led the kitchen since arriving in 2006, quickly earning Michelin recognition and later a second star, and his seasonal tasting menus combine global inspiration with exceptional Portuguese ingredients. Located at Alporchinhos in Porches, it stands alongside Vila Joya as one of the region’s two two-star restaurants in the 2026 Guide.

As the name suggests, the Atlantic is central to the experience, both on the plate and beyond the glass. Neuner’s cooking is disciplined and refined, drawing on the finest local seafood and produce. Like Vila Joya, it is a destination in its own right, so plan ahead and treat it as the centrepiece of an evening rather than a casual drop-in.

Willie’s Restaurante

No list of the Algarve’s chef restaurants would be complete without Willie’s, a Vilamoura institution with genuine history behind it. German-born chef Willie Wurger made his mark by earning the Algarve’s very first Michelin star back in 1989, and his restaurant held a star for many years thereafter. Today it occupies a classic house near the Pinhal Golf Course, in a quiet residential part of Vilamoura, tastefully decorated and wrapped in a pleasant terrace made for summer evenings.

The cooking is classic international cuisine with modern twists, built on excellent produce: a lobster tail with avocado cream, mango and bisque, or a veal rib-eye with pistachio tagliatelle, rounded off with a crisp millefeuille and white chocolate mousse cut through with fresh raspberries. While it no longer carries a star, it remains a benchmark for fine dining in Vilamoura and a reminder that a great chef, not a rating, is what makes a restaurant worth returning to.

A few practical notes if you plan to dine at these. The very top tables book far ahead: Vila Joya can require several months’ notice, while Ocean and Bon Bon are best reserved three to four months out. Dress is smart-casual across the board; long trousers and a shirt are expected, but a jacket is not required at any of them. Between them, these five span the region from Albufeira to Vilamoura, so wherever in the Algarve you settle, world-class cooking is rarely far away.

At Lusi Journal, we write about the life that comes with a home in Portugal as much as the property itself, because the two are inseparable. The Algarve’s dining scene is one more quiet argument for the south, and a delicious one at that.
